Appearances: The Story with Martha MacCallum— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t understand soci

On March 11, Andy sat down with Sandra Smith (subbing in for Martha MacCallum) to discuss Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent statements about job automation and how it gives us more time for ‘creating art’ or ‘going to space.’ When asked about his thoughts, Andy said, “With her economic policies, you definitely will have more time to do things other than work because there aren’t going to be a lot of jobs whether they’re automated or not.”

Next, Sandra asked what he thought about the ongoing socialism discussions from a businessman’s perspective. Andy clarified that unfortunately Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t understand socialism or capitalism and that about 70 percent of millennials can’t properly define either of those terms. “What we’re talking about with capitalism is your ability to improve your life, to profit… by reaching out and satisfying the needs of other people. When you run a business, you’re trying to satisfy other people’s needs… With capitalism, you succeed by reaching out to others,” argued Andy. “With socialism, you reach inward. You’re trying to get the most you can from a limited supply of goods or services the government makes available. You’re in a food line, you’re not thinking of the people in front or behind you, you’re trying to get the most for yourself.”

Sandra went on to share results from a February Fox News poll which found that 36 percent of voters under the age of 30 were favorable towards socialism along with findings from PEW Research Center, which said that Millennial and Gen Z voters would account for about 37 percent of all eligible voters in the 2020 election. Andy first addressed that in looking at the reports, as people get older, the favorability of socialism significantly decreases. He notes that the reason the younger generations have this optimistic view of socialism is likely due to a progressive education system that lacks economics, civics or American history lessons – kids are being taught more of an anti-American history. “They’ve gotten history from books that really teach America’s history as a history of oppression, not as a history of economic freedom and personal liberties. So it’s not surprising they believe this, but I have hope for the future,” Andy stated.

Lastly, Andy and Sandra discussed comments made by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about Ronald Reagan’s policies and her insinuations that he was racist. “Some of us were actually alive during the Reagan administration…Ronald Reagan did more for working class people than almost any president in our history. He got us out of a terrible, terrible recession,” argued Andy. “This is the man who ended the Cold War— now somebody like AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] may not remember the Cold War, but I grew up in it. It was a terrible, terrible experience. Everybody thought we would lose it, there’d be some terrible devastation across the planet— he put an end to that. The economy recovered, working class people recovered. Our nation was never freer and our nation was never stronger than when he left office with a 63 percent approval rating.”
